Amber DeBirk
I am a fused glass artist located in Salt Lake City, Utah. I make fused glass belt buckles, jewelry, and mixed media wall art. I also make wall art, cabinet knobs and drawer pulls, night lights, garden sculpture, and table top sculpture out of old windows, wine, beer, water, and sake bottles. During the mid-90′s, as an intern, I developed the Utah Art’s Festival’s Environmental Program which included recycling, composting, and environmental education–it was recognized by the International Festival & Events Association. Shortly, thereafter, I was hired by the Recycling Coaltion of Utah, served on the America Recycles Day National Board of Directors and the Waste Management Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics. I also coordinated Utah’s first regional sustainable building conference in 2002. My work in the environment sector and lack of glass recycling in Utah inspired me to create art out of salvaged materials. I share my love of fused glass by teaching beginning fused glass jewelry and gifts classes through Lifelong Learning at the University of Utah and also host many workshops and private glass jewelry parties at my studio. My first instructor was Kerry Transtrum, other instructors include Jack Bowman, Terry Horton, and Brian Helgerson of Sundance Glass in California.
